The Inaugural StoryCon, and more

Apr 11, 2026 by Fija Callaghan
Dearest readers, it's been a hot minute. Apart from battling some health issues and staying away from all the horribleness on the news (Are we plummeting into World War III? If you're even asking, the answer is yes), things are looking up. I recently moved into a 200-year-old crumbling fisherman's cottage by the sea, and I'm celebrating one year since the birth of my short story collection, Frail Little Embers.

In other news, I have a poem out with Asimov's Science Fiction that I think you'll really like, and a cozy short story which you can read for free here. This piece was ultimately cut from Frail Little Embers because I felt it was too similar in tone to "September Sunsets". But, it's a sweet little story and I'm glad it's out in the world.

Next month, you can find me bathing under the midnight sun with the inaugural Arctic StoryCon! I'll be giving a talk on "place as character" and how to bring a story's setting to life. Then, we're holding a generative writing workshop where you can put those ideas into practice. Tickets and registration here. Hope to see you there!

That's a wrap for now. Stay sane, stay creative.
